About Us
Richard Kuehn has been in private practice since 2010. Serving individuals, couples, and families with a style clients describe as honest, compassionate, and deeply engaged. He’s not the kind of therapist who sits back and nods, he’s right there with you, asking the questions that matter and helping you face what’s hard without ever losing hope.

Richard’s approach is rooted in real expertise. He previously served as the Clinical Director of a major psychiatric hospital, and he’s an approved supervisor for early-career therapists. His work has spanned everything from complex trauma and mood disorders to relationship repair and existential crises.

In 2009, he received a grant from the Texas Department of Health and Human Services to create Twogether in Texas, a premarital counseling program that offered free relationship support across North Houston.

Richard holds a Master’s in Counseling from The Houston Graduate School of Theology, where he developed a deep respect for the role of balanced spirituality in mental health and healing. His current work integrates neuroscience, developmental psychology, and meaningful therapeutic connection. All in service of helping clients reclaim clarity, confidence, and the freedom to live well.
FAQ's
-
How much does therapy cost?We charge $160 for the 50 minute "therapy hour." The fee for the two hour couples/family therapy is $320.
-
Do you take insurance? We don't take insurance but we do provide a "superbill" whenever you request it. Often clients will submit a superbill to the insurance provider and the provider will reimburse the client directly.
-
What type of therapy do you use? This is a complicated question to answer. Complicated because we have developed our own way of doing therapy. We call our therapy Process-Alignment Psychotherapy. It's a way of working we have been developing for over 6 years and have finally begun to share with others. We are very excited to share it with the world and are currently writing a "white paper" to explain what Process-Alignment Psychotherapy is and how it works for the general reader. One thing we can share is that it's very flexible and adaptable to most client problems and strengths. We can say this because the base framework of the therapy is built on current research in how the brain constructs individual experience for each of us uniquely. If you are familiar with different types of therapy we can tell you that it is similar to, and often borrows techniques from: psychoanalysis, mindfulness-based cognitive therapies (like ACT and Dialectical Behavior Therapy), and experientialist therapies like Gestalt and Somatic Experiencing. Now that it's probably clear as mud, we would love it if you would call and we'll be happy to explain what all of this means over the phone.

How long are your sessions and how often do you meet with clients?Sessions are 50 minutes long and we typically begin with 1 meeting a week. Once a client is showing noticeable improvement we often meet every 2 weeks and in time reduce it to once a month. Couples and family therapy is a little different. Initially we ask couples to come in for an hour and 50 minutes because our experience has taught us that sometimes an hour is only enough time to get everyone nice and "frothy". The extra hour is helpful to get the issues on the table and then take steps to get things moving in the right direction. That way our clients can leave feeling hopeful as opposed to frustrated. Once the process is in place we then shorten the meetings to the 50 minute "therapy hour." If things are going smoothly and everyone is on the same page we will end the session after an hour. The extra hour allows us room in case things are especially complicated.
-
Do you prescribe medicine? No. Medicine is the work of a psychiatrist. We provide counseling. We are not "anti" medication, but as a general rule we want to help you be free from needing to depend on medication.

I've never been to therapy before, what should I expect? That's a great question. You should expect timely communication, step by step instruction for each stage of this journey, and transparency in how we will structure our time together. Contact us for a free telephone consultation. It will give us an opportunity to understand how we might be helpful and answer any questions you might have about the process. If we don't believe we are the right fit for your need we will let you know and help you locate someone who we believe might be a better fit. Our vocation and passion is helping others. That's what it's all about.
